The summer months provide us with the perfect opportunity to grow our own foods. As the saying goes, nothing tastes as good as what you can grow yourself. However, insects can often pose a problem and easily overrun a garden. With that in mind, we introduce you to a simple and all-natural pest repellent spray to ward off those pesky bugs!

Ingredients:

  • 5-10 clove buds (clove contains eugenol, a natural insect repellent)
  • 2-5 star anise pods (star anise contains trans-anethole, a natural insect repellent)
  • 1-2 dashes of cayenne (cayenne contains capsaicin, a natural insect and mite repellent)
  • 4 cups of water

Directions:

  • Add the clove and star anise to 4 cups of water in a pot.
  • Heat up the mixture until it is boiling and then turn down the heat and let it simmer for about 5-10 minutes, simmer for a longer period of time depending on how potent you want the mixture to be.
  • Turn off the heat and let the pot sit until the water has cooled down.
  • Add the clove and star anise water mixture to a spray bottle and add cayenne.
  • Fill the remainder of the spray bottle with water if you want a more diluted mixture.
  • Spray a few pumps onto your garden beds. This is best done either early in the morning or late at night once the sun has gone down.

*The boiled clove buds and star anise pods can then be planted in the soil of the garden beds for further protection!
