A note from Sara:
Deodorants are one of the most tried personal hygiene products on the market. While they’re pretty affordable, there’s nothing worse than feeling disappointed yet again when one doesn’t quite work the way you’d hope.
My passion for seeking the right deodorant came about after college. I had spent majority of my college years “pitting out” and felt motivated to finally do something about it by discussing my concerns with my doctor. She had prescribed a stronger deodorant to which I saw great results from. When it ran out, I didn’t feel the need to refill the prescription and returned to a “normal” deodorant thinking I was “fixed.” Cut to the chase, about 2 years later, I discovered a lump in my breast. I immediately started going over everything I had done to lead me to such a devastating moment at just 25 years old. I realize that something that may have caused this was my deodorant which was blocking my lymph nodes under my arms.
Your lymphatic system helps you detox all the harsh chemicals floating around in your body. Those pathways need to remain clear and free from aluminum and synthetic fragrances that can also alter your hormones from leading to other major health concerns. It’s no wonder to me how I found myself in my doctor’s office with serious choices to make. Now, to kill the suspense it was a benign cyst and all is well, but I vowed at that moment in time that my choices for products would have to be met at the highest expectation and nothing less. Contrary to popular belief, our greatest asset in life is not a home or a car. It is our health and it must be protected with proper education at all cost.
What to Buy and What to Avoid
When shopping for a deodorant avoid these harmful and unnecessary ingredients:
1.) Aluminum
2.) Synthetic Fragrances
3.) PEGs
4.) Parabens
5.) Phthalates
6.) EDTA
7.) Talcum Powder
All of these ingredients can mess with your body’s hormones instead of helping stabilize them.
Instead, look for:
1.) Organic Ingredients
2.) Arrowroot powder
3.) Baking soda
Looking for the Organic logo can ensure that ingredients have less chemicals sprayed on them vs conventional ingredients that can carry a whole other load of chemicals and pesticides. Arrowroot and baking soda are great for absorbing liquid and keep you naturally dry without messing with your hormones.
BONUS: Avoid plastic because plastic is not only harmful to our hormones but also the environment. There are more cardboard products on the shelves than ever before and I highly recommend trying one!
