Diet Trend #3: Mediterranean

The Mediterranean diet has been around longer than most popular dieting trends (such as paleo and keto). It is widely accepted by health care professionals as being fairly balanced and ideal for optimal health. However, this dietary change still isn’t for everyone. For instance, with its inclusion of whole grains, the Mediterranean diet would be difficult to sustain for someone with gluten intolerance. This diet emphasizes eating whole foods, limiting processed foods, and consuming a moderate amount of fish and good fats on a regular basis. This diet is also the most lifestyle-focused, as the base of this diet includes daily physical activity (30 minutes or so-- not necessarily marathon training!) and the community/relational aspect of food.

As with any dietary change, you'll notice a change to your shopping list as well. Check out the table below for a quick breakdown on supplements and products you may want to consider when following a Mediterranean diet!

Product/Supplement

Benefit

Omega-3 supplements (from fish or algae oil) For those who don’t consume enough fish but want to follow the Mediterranean diet. Omega-3's are also good for helping balance inflammation in the body.
Resveratrol  Free radical-scavenging nutrient found in wine. For those who wish to follow the diet but don't drink wine.
Wild caught fish In addition to organic meats, wild caught fish is high in omega content and supports a natural diet.
